PL-600 retirement status
Microsoft retired PL-600 on June 30, 2026. The exam can no longer be scheduled, and new candidates can no longer earn the Microsoft Certified: Power Platform Solution Architect Expert credential. Microsoft's retirement policy also prevents holders from renewing the certification after the retirement date.
This page is therefore a historical guide, not a registration or preparation recommendation. It explains what PL-600 measured, what happens to credentials already earned, and which current path is closest for solution architects. If you are choosing an exam now, review the AB-100 study guide before investing in PL-600-specific training.
Who was the PL-600 exam for?
PL-600 targeted experienced functional and technical consultants moving into solution architecture, plus existing architects new to Microsoft Power Platform. It was not an entry-level Power Apps configuration exam. Candidates were expected to facilitate design decisions and guide a solution from discovery through implementation and adoption.
The audience needed architecture experience across development, configuration, integration, infrastructure, security, licensing, storage, and change management. Microsoft expected knowledge of Power Platform, Dynamics 365 customer engagement apps, related Microsoft cloud services, and third-party technologies. Familiarity with the Power Platform Well-Architected framework was also part of the final audience profile.
Before retirement, passing PL-600 was only one requirement for the expert certification. Candidates also had to hold either the Power Platform Functional Consultant Associate credential associated with PL-200 or the Power Platform Developer Associate credential associated with PL-400. This distinction mattered: an exam pass could appear in a profile without the expert certification being awarded.
Skills measured on the retired PL-600 exam
The percentages below come from the final blueprint effective September 23, 2024. They are preserved for historical reference and for practitioners using old PL-600 material as an architecture curriculum. They should not be treated as the AB-100 exam objectives.
Perform solution envisioning and requirement analysis (45–50%)
Nearly half of PL-600 focused on work that happens before detailed implementation. Candidates had to evaluate business requirements, choose appropriate Power Platform components, and consider existing applications, Dynamics 365, AppSource, Azure, independent software vendor, and third-party options. They also estimated migration and integration effort instead of assuming custom development was always the answer.
Organization discovery covered current-state processes, risk factors, success criteria, enterprise architecture, data sources, use cases, and data quality. The architect had to turn incomplete stakeholder statements into functional and non-functional requirements, then guide the future-state process design.
Fit-gap analysis connected discovery to scope. Candidates evaluated whether requirements were feasible, whether Dynamics 365 or AppSource capabilities already solved them, and how to address remaining gaps. A strong answer usually balanced configuration, extension, integration, cost, risk, and maintainability rather than selecting the most technically elaborate option.
Architect a solution (35–40%)
This domain covered end-to-end design leadership. Objectives included solution topology, customization strategy, user-experience prototypes, component reuse, architecture diagrams, data migration, role-oriented app design, visualization, automation, and environment strategy. The architect needed to make the design explainable to both delivery teams and business stakeholders.
Data-model objectives tested relationships, relationship behavior, complex requirements, and the choice between connecting to external data and importing it. Integration scope was broad: Teams, SharePoint, Dynamics 365, existing enterprise systems, third parties, authentication, business continuity, robotic process automation, and relevant networking.
Security design included business units, teams, security roles, row and column controls, Microsoft Entra ID groups, application registrations, data loss prevention policies, and external access. These controls operate at different layers, so candidates had to map a requirement to the correct enforcement point and explain how the model would be governed.
Implement the solution (15–20%)
The smallest domain still represented the architect's accountability during delivery. Candidates reviewed detailed designs and implementations, validated security boundaries, checked API limits and resource impact, and resolved automation or integration conflicts. The emphasis was design assurance and technical leadership rather than personally building every component.
Go-live objectives included performance issues, data-migration escalation, deployment-plan problems, and readiness risks. Architects had to recognize when an issue required a design change, a mitigation, a staged release, or escalation. The final blueprint treated a successful production transition as part of architecture, not an operational afterthought.
PL-600 replacement: should you take AB-100?
Microsoft's 2026 partner-skilling announcements identify Microsoft Certified: Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect, earned through AB-100 plus its prerequisite path, as the replacement for the retired Power Platform Solution Architect Expert credential. For some specializations Microsoft describes it as a partial replacement, which is the more accurate way to compare the exams.
The overlap is the senior solution-architect role: requirements, strategy, security, integration, governance, application lifecycle management, testing, deployment, and business outcomes. AB-100 changes the center of gravity to AI-powered business solutions. Its current blueprint includes Copilot Studio, Microsoft Foundry, multi-agent orchestration, agent telemetry, model security, prompt manipulation, responsible AI, and return-on-investment analysis.
Choose AB-100 if you need a current Microsoft expert credential and your target role includes AI and agentic business solutions. Do not assume old PL-600 preparation is enough. Use the AB-100 blueprint as the source of truth and treat PL-600 architecture content only as useful background for the Power Platform portions.
Are PL-600 skills still valuable?
The credential is retired, but most of its core practices remain useful. Requirements analysis, fit-gap decisions, data modeling, integration design, identity, DLP, environment strategy, migration, performance, and go-live planning are durable architecture skills. Teams still need those decisions for Power Platform implementations regardless of which certification is active.
Old material becomes risky when it presents specific product limits, licensing rules, or features as current. Use the archived PL-600 guide to understand the former scope, then verify implementation details in current Power Platform documentation. For certification study, map your work exclusively to the active exam's published objectives.
What existing credential holders should know
If you earned the certification before retirement, it stays on your Microsoft Learn transcript. Microsoft certifications are normally active for one year from the date they are earned, but a retired certification cannot be renewed after its retirement date. Check the exact status and expiration shown in your personal Learn profile rather than calculating it from an exam date.
Microsoft states that eligible retired credentials can continue contributing to partner requirements for a limited period, commonly one year after retirement. Organizations should verify the current specialization or Solutions Partner rules because replacement criteria and transition windows can differ by program.
Historical exam-day information
- PL-600 used Microsoft's scaled technical-exam scoring model, with 700 required to pass; 700 did not mean 70% correct.
- Microsoft did not guarantee a fixed question count or a permanent set of question types.
- The expert credential required an additional prerequisite certification; passing PL-600 alone was not the same as earning the certification.
- Retakes, scheduling, and renewal are no longer applicable because the exam and credential have retired.
- Brain dumps and purported live exam questions remain inappropriate even for retired exams. Use the archived objective list as a learning framework instead.
PL-600 FAQ
Is the PL-600 exam still available?
No. Microsoft retired PL-600, the related Power Platform Solution Architect Expert certification, and its renewal assessment on June 30, 2026. New candidates cannot schedule PL-600 or earn that retired credential.
What replaced PL-600?
Microsoft identifies the Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect certification and its AB-100 exam as the current replacement in partner skilling paths. It is only a partial content replacement: AB-100 emphasizes AI-powered and agentic solutions, so its blueprint is substantially different from PL-600.
What happens to an existing PL-600 certification?
A previously earned Power Platform Solution Architect Expert certification remains visible on the holder's Microsoft Learn transcript. Microsoft says retired certifications cannot be renewed after their retirement date, so the credential eventually becomes inactive according to its existing expiration date.
Did passing PL-600 alone earn the certification?
No. Before retirement, candidates also needed either the Power Platform Functional Consultant Associate certification, normally earned through PL-200, or the Power Platform Developer Associate certification, normally earned through PL-400. Completing PL-600 by itself was not enough to award the expert credential.
Are PL-600 study materials still useful?
Yes, for learning established Power Platform architecture practices such as requirements analysis, fit-gap assessment, Dataverse design, integration, security, environment strategy, and go-live planning. They are not sufficient preparation for AB-100, which adds extensive Copilot, agent, AI governance, and AI operations scope.
