SAP-C02 is retiring on November 16, 2026

AWS has confirmed that November 16, 2026 is the last day to sit SAP-C02. The successor exam, SAP-C03, opens for registration on October 27, 2026, and both versions will be bookable in parallel for a short window before SAP-C02 closes.

If you are mid-study and can test before November 16, 2026, finishing SAP-C02 is usually the safer path: this page's domains, weights, and practice content are verified against the current exam guide today, while SAP-C03's own guide and third-party material are still new. If your target date falls after the cutoff, or you cannot be confident of finishing in time, plan to sit SAP-C03 instead and watch the official exam page for its published domains, pricing, and format once AWS releases them.

What candidates booking now should do

If you can sit the exam before November 16, 2026, keep studying SAP-C02: this page's domains, weights, and resources are verified against AWS's current, published exam guide, and the bulk of third-party training content (courses, practice questions, study groups) is still built against SAP-C02 rather than SAP-C03. Book your seat early, since testing centers and online-proctoring slots tend to fill up in the final weeks before a retirement date.

If your realistic study timeline runs past the cutoff, shift your plan to SAP-C03 now rather than cramming SAP-C02 at the end. AWS has not yet published SAP-C03's domain weights or question format on its public pages as of this review; check the official certification page periodically as that date approaches, and expect the underlying skills — Well-Architected design, multi-account governance, migration, and continuous improvement — to carry over even though the exact task statements and weights may shift.

Who should take the SAP-C02 exam?

SAP-C02 is for people who perform a solutions architect role and have 2 or more years of experience using AWS services to design and implement cloud solutions. AWS expects candidates to evaluate cloud application requirements and make architectural recommendations that extend across multiple applications and projects within a complex organization.

There is no formal certification prerequisite, but this is a Professional-level exam. Most candidates hold broad Associate-level AWS knowledge plus real design and operations experience before attempting it. Frontend mobile development, the 12-factor app methodology, and in-depth operating-system internals are explicitly out of scope.

The exam is built around the AWS Well-Architected Framework. Expect scenarios with several plausible-looking designs where requirements around governance, migration risk, cost, security, or resilience determine the single best answer.

Skills measured on SAP-C02

The official SAP-C02 exam guide defines four content domains. Design for New Solutions is the largest at 29%, and the two "existing environment" domains — organizational complexity and continuous improvement — combine for 51% of the exam, so greenfield design knowledge alone is not enough to pass. Treat the guide as a checklist rather than a reading list: for each task statement, you should be able to state the preferred AWS-native approach, name the service or feature that implements it, and explain the situation where a different, non-default choice would actually be correct.

Design Solutions for Organizational Complexity (26%)

Architect network connectivity strategies across multiple VPCs, on-premises, and co-location environments, including hybrid DNS and traffic monitoring. Prescribe security controls: cross-account access, third-party identity federation, encryption at rest and in transit, and centralized security event notification and auditing.

Design reliable and resilient architectures against stated RTO and RPO targets using disaster-recovery strategies such as pilot light, warm standby, and multi-site. Design a multi-account AWS environment with AWS Organizations and AWS Control Tower, including central logging and a multi-account governance model. Determine cost optimization and visibility strategies: tagging, purchasing options, and rightsizing tools such as AWS Compute Optimizer.

Design for New Solutions (29%)

This largest domain covers greenfield design end to end. Design a deployment strategy with infrastructure as code, CI/CD, and configuration management, choosing managed services to reduce operational overhead. Design for business continuity with disaster-recovery configurations, data and database replication, and centralized monitoring that proactively recovers from failure.

Determine security controls based on stated requirements: least-privilege IAM, security group and network ACL rules, attack mitigation for large-scale web applications, and patch-management strategy. Design for reliability with multi-AZ and multi-Region architectures, auto scaling, loosely coupled application integration, and DNS routing policies. Design for performance with caching, buffering, read replicas, and purpose-built service selection, and determine a cost optimization strategy using pricing models, storage tiering, and data-transfer cost modeling.

Continuous Improvement for Existing Solutions (25%)

Determine a strategy to improve operational excellence: logging and monitoring strategy, deployment process improvements, automation opportunities, and configuration-management automation. Determine a strategy to improve security: secrets management, least-privilege audits, traceability, automated vulnerability response, and patch and backup processes.

Determine a strategy to improve performance by translating business requirements into measurable metrics, testing remediation options, and adopting new managed services. Determine a strategy to improve reliability by evaluating existing architecture for single points of failure and enabling data replication and self-healing. Identify cost optimization opportunities by analyzing usage reports, Cost and Usage Reports, and tagging for cost allocation.

Accelerate Workload Migration and Modernization (20%)

Select existing workloads and processes for potential migration using portfolio assessment, the seven common migration strategies (the 7 Rs), and total cost of ownership evaluation. Determine the optimal migration approach: data-migration tools such as AWS DataSync and the AWS Snow Family, application migration tools, networking and identity services, and database migration tools such as AWS DMS.

Determine a new architecture for existing workloads by selecting compute, container, storage, and database platforms. Determine opportunities for modernization and enhancements: decoupling components, serverless compute, container platforms, purpose-built databases, and application integration services such as Amazon SQS, Amazon SNS, and AWS Step Functions.

How to prepare for SAP-C02

Build a multi-account sandbox that mirrors the exam's organizational-complexity theme: AWS Organizations with multiple accounts, centralized logging, a hub-and-spoke or transit gateway network, and a cross-account deployment pipeline. Practice designing — not just deploying — disaster-recovery patterns at each RTO/RPO tier from backup-and-restore through multi-site active/active.

Run a migration exercise end to end: assess a sample workload against the 7 Rs, pick a data-transfer mechanism, and re-architect the result with containers or serverless where it fits. For every official task statement, write the simplest compliant design, the main failure mode, and the control that catches it. Use AWS Skill Builder's official practice questions to train pacing on long, multi-paragraph scenarios before attempting full-length timed sets.

Budget more time than the Associate exams required. Most candidates report several weeks of focused review on top of real design experience, because SAP-C02 tests judgment across domains simultaneously rather than one service at a time. Keep a running list of AWS services you have not personally deployed, and close each gap with a short hands-on exercise rather than reading documentation alone — the exam rewards knowing how a service actually behaves under failure, not just its marketing description.

SAP-C02 practice questions

Professional-level practice should present an existing environment, a stated constraint, and a business goal, then ask for the best design among several technically valid options. Good practice items explain why each distractor fails on cost, blast radius, operational overhead, or compliance — not just which AWS service to pick.

Use only objective-aligned practice questions, written from the public exam guide. Dumps are against AWS's certification agreement, go stale the moment AWS revises a guide, and will not prepare you for SAP-C03's updated scenarios.

SAP-C02 compared with Solutions Architect Associate

Solutions Architect – Associate validates core design and deployment skills for a single workload. SAP-C02 expands that to multi-account governance, organizational complexity, migration portfolios, and continuous improvement of systems already in production. The Associate certification is not a formal prerequisite, but most candidates complete it, plus real design experience, before attempting the Professional exam.

Career value of AWS Solutions Architect Professional

The credential aligns with senior solutions architect, principal engineer, and cloud architecture leadership roles that span multiple teams or business units. It is most credible paired with evidence of designs you have shipped: migration plans executed, multi-account governance you built, or cost and resilience tradeoffs you owned.

Because SAP-C02 is retiring, candidates earning it now should expect SAP-C03 to become the market's reference version within a year. The underlying skills — Well-Architected design, migration, and governance — carry over regardless of which exam version is on your badge, and AWS's recertification policy treats both versions as the same credential for renewal purposes.

Hiring managers generally care more about what you can design and defend in an interview than which exam code appears on your certificate. Be ready to walk through a real architecture decision: the constraints you were given, the options you ruled out, and the tradeoff that decided the final design. That kind of story is harder to fake than a badge, and it is exactly what the Professional-level exam is trying to measure in the first place.

SAP-C02 FAQ

Is the SAP-C02 exam being retired?

Yes. AWS has set November 16, 2026 as the last day to take SAP-C02. Registration for the replacement exam, SAP-C03, opens October 27, 2026. If you are already studying, finish and schedule SAP-C02 before the cutoff rather than waiting for SAP-C03's full guide and question bank to mature.

What replaces SAP-C02?

SAP-C03, AWS's updated AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional exam. AWS has not published SAP-C03's domains or question format on this page yet; check the official exam page before registering for the new version.

Is the SAP-C02 exam hard?

Yes. SAP-C02 is a Professional-level exam with long, multi-requirement scenarios. It expects you to weigh organizational complexity, migration, cost, security, and resilience tradeoffs rather than recall single facts.

How many questions are on SAP-C02?

The exam has 75 questions: 65 scored and 10 unscored. AWS does not identify the unscored items, and questions are multiple choice or multiple response.

What score do you need to pass SAP-C02?

The minimum passing score is 750 on AWS's 100–1,000 scaled range. Scoring is compensatory, so you need an overall pass rather than a pass in every domain.

Are AWS Associate certifications required for SAP-C02?

No certification is a formal prerequisite. AWS recommends 2 or more years of hands-on experience designing and implementing cloud solutions on AWS before attempting this Professional-level exam.
